London Underground takes the lead in Data Protection

The challenge

London Underground is one of the largest users of CCTV cameras in the country. Satisfying the provisions of the Data Protection Act, where a person can request to see all video information held on them, can be a time-consuming and expensive effort, especially when releasing the information could potentially expose the coverage of the camera system to persons planning a threat to the network.

Key benefits

  • Easily camouflage and mask people and objects
  • Reduce the cost and complexity of responding to DPA requests
  • Weeks of effort reduced to hours
  • Highlight people and objects to enhance security of the Underground
  • Payback achieved within one DPA request
The solution

The first Data Protection Act request that London Underground received highlighted just how time-consuming and expensive the process can be. Once the man in charge of handling DPA request, had taken legal advice on what he could and could not release, he located a consultant that could process and mask the video tapes that the Underground produces.

It took two weeks to organise the exercise and a further day and a half of the consultant
